Understanding the Needs of Our Elderly Community

Understanding the needs of an ageing community was the focus of the last seminar in the Law Society's ‘Diversity and the Law Series’ which was launched at the start of this year to examine the contribution and impact of the law towards creating a more diverse and pluralist society.
The seminar which took place at the Long Gallery at Stormont, provided a platform for the legal profession and representative groups to meet discuss and share best practises on how best to promote a greater understanding of the elderly and their interaction with the legal profession in Northern Ireland.
Amongst the issues discussed were enduring powers of attorney, the need to make a will and helping the elderly to organise their legal matters.
Speaking at the event was Dame Joan Harbison CBE, Linda Johnston, Solicitor, Brian Speers, Solicitor and the President of the Law Society, Michael Robinson.
Representatives from various interest groups, Government agencies and members of the legal profession attended the seminar.
Commenting on the seminar the President of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, Michael Robinson said:
“This is the final seminar in our Diversity series which the Law Society has run over the last year and which have focused on providing a platform for engagement between the legal profession and various representative groups.
The seminar on age and the panel discussion which followed highlighted the need for proactive engagement and greater understanding of our ageing community in Northern Ireland.
Solicitors throughout Northern Ireland remain committed to supporting the needs of our elderly community".
