Pathways to justice through EU and UN mechanisms, judicial review and amicus curiae procedure

The PILS Project, PILA and Arthur Cox have collaborated to develop a series of cross-border NGO Engagement Guides covering the following legal mechanisms:

1.       Individual non-court mechanisms at European level;

2.       Engagement with UN Special Procedures mandate holders;

3.       Taking individual complaints to UN treaty bodies;

4.       Amicus curiae procedure; and

5.       Judicial Review.

This session will examine the guide topics in more detail, in particular the less frequently used routes to claims resolution. It will also demonstrate how private law practices, public interest litigation organisations and NGOs can successfully coordinate proactive pro bono projects across multiple jurisdictions.

This event forms part of UK Pro Bono Week, the annual celebration of legal pro bono taking place from 7 – 11 November 2022.

Confirmed speakers include:

Maria McCloskey, Director, The PILS Project

Maria is a solicitor and currently chairs the Law Society of Northern Ireland’s Human Rights and Equality Working Group.

Hilary Perry, Membership Coordinator, The PILS Project

Hilary is a lawyer specialising in public and administrative law, who has previously worked at the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women.

Alannah McKeaveney, Associate, Arthur Cox

Alannah is an associate in the Litigation team at Arthur Cox. In addition to drafting contact for the guides, she was involved in coordinating the overall project alongside her Dublin colleagues.
