Sentencing Review Consultation Update

The public consultation on sentencing policy in Northern Ireland is about to commence from Monday 28 October 2019. The Consultation will be available to the public on citizen space

The Review has undertaken comprehensive research, considered policy and practice in other jurisdictions and engaged with experts as well as those affected by sentencing policy. The topics covered by the review include:-

•             the principles and purposes of sentencing; 

•             public perceptions of sentencing; 

•             the current legislative framework for sentencing for certain categories of crime;  including death by dangerous driving, attacks on frontline services, hate crime and crimes against elderly and vulnerable people.

•             the setting of tariffs for murder;  

•             arrangements for unduly lenient sentences; 

•             the use of community sentences; and 

•             improving current arrangements for sentencing guidance.
