Probate work generates a large number of complaints. Delays and failure to deal appropriately with IHT issues recur frequently. This practical guide to estate administration has been designed to provide maximum benefit to sole practitioners and small/medium firms. Topics to be covered include:

  • Knowing your client;

  • Getting instructions;

  • Securing the client;

  • Missing beneficiaries;

  • Administration of estates in general and the most common issues/problems;

  • Issues around wills;

  • IHT – forms, valuations, IHT by instalments, who pays transfer, specific request for land;

  • Deed of variation;

  • Farming APR, BPR, Single Farm Payments;

  • Charging clauses;

  • Thresholds, payments, timelines;

  • Estate accounts, accounting for interest, CGT, loss relief, corrective accounting;

  • Common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

The seminar will be delivered by Michael Graham, Cleaver Fulton Rankin. Michael is Head of the Private Client Department, and specialises in trusts, tax, the administration of estates and issues affecting elderly and vulnerable clients. Michael is the former Chair of the Northern Ireland branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and also sits on the Law Society of Northern Ireland committee for Non-Contentious Business. Michael is a member of the Executive Committee of Will to Give, a local charity created to promote charitable giving by will in Northern Ireland.
