New CPD Courses

1.   SCAM ALERT: COMBATING FRAUD

As part of the Law Society of Northern Ireland’s commitment to combating SCAMS AND FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY, we have organised a bespoke conference for our members, involving the four local banks and law enforcement. 

This invaluable seminar will be of interest to solicitors, bookkeepers and other members of every practice as part of your commitment to combatingSCAMS AND FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY.

The seminar includes:

  • Introduction to online banking fraud - an overview of how fraudsters trick one into handing over confidential details.
  • Phishing, Vishing and Malware - definitions, who is targeted, and specific tactics used by fraudsters.  
  • Online banking best practices - know when to use/when not to use ones security credentials. 
  • Technology best practices - anti-virus software, keeping software up to date etc.

To increase accessibility the seminar will run in several locations across Northern Ireland:

2.   CONVEYANCING CPD SESSION – DEALING WITH DISTRESSED PROPERTIES AND HIGH HEDGES AND BOUNDARIES  

To increase accessibility to CPD events for those solicitors based in the North West and West there will be an additional Conveyancing CPD seminar running alongside the Fraud presentations on the 3rd and 4th July 2014.

The seminar will cover 2 topics - High Hedges and Boundary Issues and Dealing with Distressed Properties.

High Hedges and Boundary Issues

High Hedges – Charles O’Neill, a Chairman of the Northern Ireland Valuation Tribunal will discuss this issue in relation to the High Hedges Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 and applications to the Northern Ireland Valuation Tribunal. 

Boundary Issues – Patricia Montgomery,Director of Registration (Registrar of Titles), Land and Property Services, will discuss this topic.  She will also cover the new Positional Improvement project relating to the updating of the Land Registry map.

Dealing with Distressed Properties

The landscape for a conveyancing solicitor is constantly changing.  Therefore it is still vital that practitioners keep up to date with new developments. The Society is continuing with its series of topical, relevant CPD events for Conveyancing solicitors.  Due to continued demand the Society is repeating this session on Buying and Selling in a Distressed Market.  The session will be delivered by Mark Jameson (Derry session) and Ian Huddleston (Ballygawley session), Pinsent Masons, Belfast
