Interaction Between Criminal Defence Work and Human Rights Issues

Nichola Harte graduated with an LLB in law from Queens University Belfast and was admitted to the role of solicitors in Northern Ireland in 1991.  She has 21 years experience in private practice and is one of the founding partners of Harte Coyle Collins Solicitors. She has extensive experience in personal Injury and criminal defence work specialising in Administrative Law and Human Rights.  She has represented clients in high profile criminal trials and pursued  judicial review challenges to the House of Lords/Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights. During the seminar Nichola will look at the interaction between criminal defence work and human rights issues with a particular focus on her firm’s role in challenging the covert surveillance of consultations between solicitors and their clients when in custody.

Karen Quinlivan is a graduate of University College Dublin and has a Masters in Human Rights Law from Queen’s University Belfast.  She was called to the Bar in 1993 and called to the Senior Bar in October 2011. She specialises in public law with a particular focus on human rights cases and is also involved in criminal defence work.  She has been involved in a number of high profile human rights cases including cases heard before the House of Lords, the Supreme Court and has also successfully represented Applicants before the European Court of Human Rights. During the seminar Karen will look at the interaction between criminal defence work and human rights issues, some current case law and potential future developments in this area.
