Human Rights and Equality Group
The Human Rights and Equality Group (HREG) sits
under the umbrella of the Society’s Future of the Profession Committee, and
reports to and agrees objectives and initiatives with this Committee.
The HREG is responsible for taking forward
policy objectives in the areas of human rights, equality, diversity, and law
reform. It focuses on promoting the upholding of the Rule of Law, considering
areas for law reform, trying to affect change in those areas, and raising
awareness around various human rights and equality issues. Another key
component of the group’s work is promoting the independence of the legal
profession.
As a Working Group, made up of practitioners
and other professionals with expertise in the area, it adopts a flexible and
informal approach, allowing it to respond and be reactive to issues as they
arise.
