European Lawyers Day 2019 - Download the Podcast

Dear Colleague

The Law Society of Northern Ireland is providing members with access to a unique podcast which has been produced to mark European Lawyers Day 2019.

Now in its fifth year, European Lawyers Day provides an opportunity to highlight the legal profession’s significant contribution to the rule of law and justice system throughout Europe.

The Society has been working in conjunction with other members of Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) to actively promote the overarching theme of this years European lawyers Day which focuses on the right to legal aid in criminal matters and access to a lawyer when detained in prison.

As President of the Society, I was delighted to contribute alongside a distinguished panel of experts to a podcast which explores this years theme and the current situation across England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, comparing common law adversarial systems with civil law jurisdictions on the continent.

The panel included myself and -

* Richard Atkinson, (Law Society Criminal Law Committee)

* Simon Creighton, Partner (Bhatt Murphy Solicitors)

* Gillian Mawdsley, (Law Society of Scotland Criminal Law Committee)

* Ed Lloyd-Cape, Professor (University of the West of England)

I would encourage all members to listen to the podcast which provides insight and contributions from experts from various jurisdictions on a timely and important theme.

Suzanne Rice

President

Law Society of Northern Ireland
