Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions

The fundamental function of the Director of Public Prosecutions is the direction and supervision of public prosecutions and related criminal matters. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking a senior lawyer with the necessary vision, experience and executive management skills for this important leadership position.

Reporting to the Director, the Deputy Director will provide strategic leadership as the key driver of change in the organisation.  The Deputy will be required to take leadership and managerial responsibility for the effective and efficient delivery of prosecution service across the four divisions within the Office of the DPP and through strong strategic engagement with key external stakeholders including State Solicitors, Counsel and the Garda Síochána.

Other responsibilities of the Deputy Director include:

  • supporting the Director in the performance of the Director’s duties as outlined in the Prosecution of Offences Act 1974;

  • fulfilling the role of Accounting Officer, including accountability for budget and expenditure for the Office and engagement with the C&AG and with the Public Accounts Committee as required.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a qualified Barrister/Solicitor

  • Have practiced as a barrister or solicitor for at least five years out of the last ten years at a level of achievement expected for this senior post.

And will have:

  • Extensive legal professional experience at an appropriately senior level;

  • A high level of drive and resilience and a strong commitment to improving the criminal justice system for all who use it;

  • The ability to lead strategic organisational and/or sectoral change;

  • Outstanding communications and influencing skills with an ability to effectively represent the Office sectorally, nationally and internationally, on a wide variety of criminal justice issues.
