Dear Colleague,
Further to the President's announcement on the 18th June 2020 regarding
the launch of the Human Rights and Equality Group (‘HREG’), the Society is
pleased to invite expressions of interest from those members who may wish to
join the Group.
The HREG succeeds the former Human Rights
and Equality Committee and is part of a reorganisation within the Society and
will report to the Future of the Profession Committee.
There has already been a significant
interest shown by members wishing to join the HREG and therefore the Society
is inviting those interested in joining to outline, in no more than 250 words
their experience and interest in human rights, equality and diversity.
This might be your experience of legal
practice in this area, acting as a human rights and equality advocate for
Section 75 groups, or perhaps your experience as a person from a minority
background who is committed to promoting human rights and equality issues.
The Society is inviting those who have
already expressed an interest in the Group to consider making a submission in
the same way as above.
All submissions must be received by close of
business on 10th July 2020.
The Society is confident that those
appointed will contribute to making the HREG successful in generating new
ideas and proposals on issues of practice and policy in this area.
The HREG will have few formalities and will
be flexible in its operation, working in a similar way to a ‘think tank’ for
the Future of the Profession Committee.
With that in mind, the Society intends to
maintain a small core membership of the Human Rights and Equality Group
(including the Chair of the Group and the Chair of the Future of the
Profession Committee).
We appreciate that this will mean that some
solicitors who are interested in becoming members will not have the
opportunity at this point in time to become members of the HREG.
However, we intend to maintain a list of
those expressing interest to assist with specific pieces of work moving
forward which fall within their particular area of expertise.
The Society remains very open to being
contacted by members about issues which fall under the Group’s remit, and
will endeavour to discuss each issue brought to our attention and respond
about future plans with comments.
Please send your expressions of interest,
along with your submission, to Frank.Geddis@lawsoc-ni.org by close of
business on 10th July 2020.
The Society particularly welcomes
expressions of interest from solicitors who are from an ethnic minority
background.
We look forward to receiving your
submission.
