The Society is continuing with its series of practical regulatory sessions to ensure that all solicitors have access to the most up to date information in relation to Anti Money Laundering.

Embedding a culture of compliance helps demonstrate that you understand and are managing the risks to your practice. This course is designed to provide practical assistance on how to improve your systems, ensure that your fee earners take compliance seriously and how to spot money laundering. Topics to be covered include:

· An update on the legislation and regulatory compliance;

· The wider financial crime picture:

- Developments relating to the proposed Fourth EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive and what it might mean in practice;

- Other recent developments, in particular Enforcement and activities of Supervisors, from which lessons can be drawn;

- Typologies and feedback, FATF, Supervisors;

· The risk-based approach – the importance of your firm’s risk assessment, including a process of review and risk profiling;

· Effective client and matter risk assessment;

· Ongoing monitoring;

· Update on Higher risk clients, PEPs, Country Risk Issues, Financial Sanctions.

The seminar will be delivered by a regular Law Society of Northern Ireland presenter – Sue Mawdsley. Sue is an experienced solicitor with Legal Risk LLP and co-author of The Money Laundering Reporting Officer’s Handbook: A Guide for Solicitors.

To increase accessibility the seminar will run in several locations:

Thursday 16 April 2015 10am- 12noon Killyhevlin Hotel, Enniskillen

Thursday 16 April 2015 3pm – 5pm Roe Park Resort, Limavady

Friday 17 April 2015 10am – 12noon Canal Court Hotel, Newry

Friday 17 April 2015 2pm – 4pm Law Society House, Belfast

It is expected that all firms will have at least one suitable representative in attendance at one of the sessions as AML compliance is not optional. The Society will be monitoring attendance.
